View Full Version : monitor display problem

On my friend's computer, the windows displayed are too big for the screen.
This even happens at the windows 98 startup screen because microsoft is
mostly out of view. Once started, the background and taskbar are much wider
than the screen. Also, the pincushion setting is messed up..the screen looks like an hour glass. I tried changing all of the display settings and resolutions, removed and reinstalled the monitor and adapter and tried manually changing the setting with the OSD control. This is a weird part, I can adjust the vertical alignment settings with the OSD, but when I try to do the horizontal settings or the pincushion, it shows the values changing but nothing actually happens.
He even went as far as to reformat and recover his hard drive but with no success. He recently added a scanner to his system. Also, for some reason now the printer won't print a test page(not sure if it is related just thought I would mention it.)It is a HP Pavillion computer with a Pavillion S70 17-inch monitor. Any suggestions would be appreciated because I am truly lost.

How does the display act in Safe Mode? If it does the same, I'd say it's a bad monitor. If not, try setting the resolution to 640x480 and reboot, and see what happens.

If by OSD you mean the controls on the monitor itself, do not have any affect, I would even more strongly suspect a bad monitor.

It is still messed up in safe mode and when I boot from a floppy so I will tell him to take it in. Thanks for your help.

G'day Brikelbk,

May I suggest you go to hp website, type in your friends comp. model name and code, go to the download and look for a monitor display application or graphics or the like and install and see what happens. Otherwise go into the control panal and use the wizard to install the hardware manually. (if can't find, type in the help & support search box for hardware installation)

I hope this helps.

Cheers

Que,
This thread was 5 years ago, so it probably was resolved one way or the other quite a while ago?
