See if your monitor has controls for horizontal and vertical convergence. The vertical convergence in particular can made a big difference for sharpness.

You might also try installing newer video drivers, especially if 256 colors is the highest setting available. That would mean the video card is running on generic VGA drivers. If you already have 16,24 and/or 32 bit true color, I would go with sleddog's suggestion to try the monitor settings.

thank you sleddog & paleopete for your reply's regarding my problem with picture clarity(mainly with text part) as a follow up to your reply can either one of you give me a step by step to adjust the monitor settings ie
the vertical convergence you spoke of? also , i downloaded the latest driver for my monitor (mag innovision model dx 17) but this didn't help.
i'm also wondering if putting in a high quality video card would help my display issues. any follow-up to my dilema are appreciated!

The process depends on the monitor type. Some have a button on front of the monitor that brings up a menu, some have a row of buttons that each perform different functions. I think some also operate by a software method, or similar.

Usually you can play with each button and see the results instantly onscreen, and can fairly easily undo any unwanted changes. Try the buttons, and see what they do. The menus are usually fairly easy to understand, it might take a bit of tinkering to find out how to cursor through the menus and options. It's very difficult to give you detailed instructions, since most operate differently, unless the person trying to answer is sitting in front of the same monitor and can give you a step by step...

In the case of text, i find that the standard 'typewriter' text, as the one used when posting a reply or any other font that not bold, seem to appear more blurred when the brightness on the monitor is increased and the text is against a white background. You can try turning down the brightness some....note I said BRITENESS and not CONTRAST. However, you may need to adjust the CONTRAST after.
