I want to connect my sound card up to my music centre - but there is no line-in, only a microphone socket. Is it ok to use this as the input? Can't afford decent speakers with built in amplifiers for the puter.

What you need is line out, not line in. Line in sends a low impedance signal to the sound card, you need to send a low impedance signal out, to the stereo. You can use the speaker out, but keep the computer volume very low, it will distort and overdrive the amp in the stereo easily, then you can blow the amp. That would mean replacing a stereo that's lots more expensive than a pair of $50 or so speakers...
In fact, I think I saw a pair that should be reasonably decent posted at CSO (http://www.computersurplusoutlet.com) recently. $40 I think it was. That may be an option too, not nearly as expensive as a new stereo or good speakers from retail outlets...
