The following is from a friend that is new to PC's and needs some help:
"My current problem is trying to install an Ethernet card on my computer for my DSL connection. This was the first time I opened my computer case. It was quite a traumatic experience for me. I had to go lie down when I finished:-).
I followed the directions to the letter for putting the card in the PCI slot. When I plugged the power cord back in, reconnected all of my peripherals, and hooked the cable from my gateway to the plug for the card(at this point the card is in the computer) I then powered on my computer. Nothing happened! Windows did not say it recognized new hardware and the "new hardware installation wizard" did not appear.
I am trying to figure how I can send you information about my IRQ things. There seems to be something on all of the ones I have. Most of them, I don't know what they are. The mouse and obvious stuff I do recognize.(Key board, comm ports) and stuff like that.
I have been at this for a month now. I bought (2) two Ethernet cards and I have installed and uninstalled over and over again. I don't know what else to try! Please give me advise if you can.
The first card I bought was a Phoebe(brand name). The one I am trying to use now is a "linksys" (networkeverywhere)
By the way, with the first card(the Phoebe) when I used the "add hardware utility" in control panel, my machine recognized the card(hardware but it would not install the driver that was on the floppy that came with the card. The same thing happened with the second card.
I am running Windows 98, I have 64 megs. of ram and a 6 gig. hard drive. My computer is (2)two years old."

The reason that the drivers were not installed on EITHER card is that you have to BROWSE the cd or floppy that came with the card to find the correct drivers (they usually put about 5-8 set's of drivers on a cd or floppy)...then it will install them. The reason it isnt finding any new cards is probably a result of "?"'s in the Device Mgr. where WIn didnt know what to do with the device(since no drivers were installed) and put it in the "Unknown Devices" category (but the device IS using resources). Just REMOVE any question marked devices and try again with the "browse" feature when it asks for drivers. Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

The first thing I would do is see if there is a diagnostic program or setup program on that floppy. If there is, boot to DOS and run it. You may have to set the NIC to be "PnP" (Plug and Play) before Windows can detect it. You can also use the program to "hard code" the cards I/O,IRQ,and Memory range settings.

When you say it "would not install the driver that was on the floppy". What error or message did Windows give you?

Thanks guys had a feelign but wanted some expert opinions - I'll have Edward try it and, once again, recommend that he try looking at the forum for more advice than I can give. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
