I have a weird problem. I have not made any changes to my computer and suddenly the screen shows (with a few games) vertical lines. I couln't fix the problem so I installed win98 & win98SE again, installed drivers and problem still not fixed.
I format c: installed win98 & win98SE, tried first with basic drivers (didn't worked). Updated every thing, didn't work. I don't have any conflicts, my Bios is set properly, and I have run McAfee virusscanner. But the problems still expand. Sometimes I got memory problems. My sound is weird with speach, else it is wonderful. My system is sometimes very slow en my CD-rom drive is sometimes so slow that I get the error message "This isn't a valid win-32 application". And video is stil a problem with some games. My display isn't a problem at all, win98, word, my desktop. everything isn't a problem but games. A few went well (e.g. tomb raider 4 throug my videocard hardware render), and some went wrong (e.g. need for speed 3, halflive). Before i got these problems, I have had installed these games also, and it worked fine. So my system can handle the games.

The only thing I can see is wrong, is that directx with direct3d sometimes doesn't past the test. (that is with directx 5.0, 6.1, 7.0 and 8.0a the same problem, so it isn't directx) What can i do futher? I have checked for lose connections, were not there. What also strange was, that the setup of win98 was really fast (20 minutes) but the scandisk took about an hour.

My system is: 800Mhz AMD duron, MSI K7t pro 2-a, 30 Gb Maxtor HD, 32 speed CD-player, AGP TNT2 m64 32 mb videocard, a simple network card and directx 8.0a.

Welcome, http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Tjitske! Do you have any anti-virus programs running? If so, disable it.

I am a bit confused about your problems so I will try to set them out in a list so everyone can pitch in to give you some ideas:
1.Vertical lines on the screen with some DOS games..all else runs fine in Windows
2.Some memory problems...what are the error messages?
3.Strange sound when regular speech spoken ...is that using the microphone? Music is OK?
4. CD Rom sometimes runs VERY slow and gives errors
5.Cant run a full test of Direct X
6.Scandisk took about 1 hour last time run...Was that a "Thorough Test" or
just a regular test?
My system is: 800Mhz AMD duron, MSI K7t pro 2-a, 30 Gb Maxtor HD, 32 speed CD-player, AGP TNT2 m64 32 mb videocard, a simple network card and directx 8.0a.

OK....now hopefully we can get some answers for you!
First I would reinstall the LATEST Direct X drivers at the Microsoft site that are available. Post back with the results of that.

Oke, I always disable my anti-virus program. I don't have internet, so i only enable it, when I want to check every thing.

I have reinstalled directx 8.0a. That was het latest driver available at the microsoft site. That didn't make a difference.

My sound is strange when I hear speach from a cd-rom or the harddisk (in games) I don't have a microphone.

My graphic problem, those vertical lines, appear in Windows games (not dos games).

Scandisk was just a regular test.

I don't know the error message from the memory any more. I tried to write it down, but yesterday there weren't any memory problems at all.

Hope this makes everything clear.
