Ok here is the situation I have a Radeon DDR 32MB
1GHZ Athlon
ABIT KT7- Raid
128MB PC100
ATA-100 WD 20GB
Windows 2000
Mafreey ATA33 50X CDROM
Samsung 8x8x32
When I play games they lock up here and there. Its not bad but one of my friends has almost identical systems and his never locks up. I installed the right drivers put my CD rom on DMA, my hard drive on DMA every thing on DMA. Yet still locks up here and there. All I can think of is it is the CDROM. I think I have a good enough system to run games flawlessly but maybe I dont. ALso my friend with the identical system has 256 RAM PC133. Maybe that is the difference. I dont know I need some insight. Also I built a system for my friend its a 800 MHZ and it locks up to(worst though) Help?

A couple of things that would help us to help you.

What game are you playing? Many games are just plain screwy in W2k
What other software is running during your game? This is especially important because while you have a LOT of ram, well, windows hogs it and other programs steal cpu cycles.
Does your motherboard use a VIA chipset? If so, go here (http://www.s3graphics.com/drivers/index_new2.htm#3) to get the right drivers for it.
Are any of your devices conflicting with eachother (doubtful, but something to check)?

I hope this helps. Keep us updated!

Windows 2000 is a memory hog. ( I wouldn't install it in a computer with less than 256MB of RAM). Still even with 128MB of RAM it shouldn't lockup much. Have you tried to set the AGP aperture setting in your BIOS to 64MB or less? Also when you installed the 4in1 drivers did you choose "turbo" for the AGP setting? Do you have any other programs running in the background?

To check your DirectX settings click "start" then "run" and type in "dxdiag". As you click thur the pages of this program's dialog window, you'll see any problems found by the program displayed in the "notes" field.

I wouldn't recommend unistalling directx ( there are 3rd party programs that claim to be able to do this.) But you could try reinstalling or upgrading to the latest version.

Thanks for the help ghost hacker and others. I check out the direct x settings and every thing was in order. I guess its Windows 2000 so I am going to install Window 98 SE on my other hard drive to see what happens. Luckily I have two hard drives I just can t let 2000 go cause it is rock solid I recommend it to any one that has stability problems. You think if I run it through DOS it would be better? thanks

Yes ,If their older games meant to run in DOS. You might have to free up conventional memory. (use a memory manager, load devices and DOS high)

Don't know how the Radeon will do in DOS. I have the same card but have never ran any DOS games in it. ( though I've got some good flight sims I've been meaning to fire up.) It shouldn't be a problem.

Hope this helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
