I have an IBM Thinkpad 760EL notebook computer, 133 Pentium, 32MB RAM, 2.1GB HD, Windows 95. (Actually, it belongs to a family member that brought it to me and said "Fix this"). We have lost all sound. He was trying to load a new program, unsuccessfully, and must have changed some settings. Going to control panel -> system-> device manager-> sound..., the ES1688 Plug and Play audiodrive has the warning symbol (exclamation point in yellow) and says "this device is not working properly" (no kidding!!) I unsuccessfully tried to update the drivers. I then went to the IBM website and downloaded the "AudioDrive Features Package for Windows 95". I went into safe-mode and deleted all audio drivers. It still will not locate this package when I try to update drivers. I can go into Windows Explorer and it is there, but, if I "browse" when trying to update driver, it's not there.
Someone told me to make sure "plug and play" is enabled in Windows 95. I don't know how to check this. HELP!!!!

First, the plug n play option is usually an option setting in the bios...not sure that it will cure what ails the system though.

Updating drivers is done many diff ways...using Windows update driver feature in the Device Manager is one method, but honestly most of the driver updates I do call for another approach (at least in the instructions provided). When using the update feature it is looking for a file with the extension .inf this may be why it won't go to where you put the downloaded file. Did you check the download to see if it was a zip file that needed to be unzipped? Also, a lot of folks throw a readme.txt file in there with their preferred driver install method.

I've even seen some updates that require uninstalling the device to update the driver correctly.

Hope this helps.
