I recently got a second vidcard for one of my desktop systems, an nVidia Vanta LT 8mb AGP card that I believe has the Riva128 chip...I'm trying to run dual-monitor with the Permedia2 4mb PCI card that was already in it...

It works fine in Windows XP Beta 2...but in ME it will not load windows with the Vanta card enabled. I get a bsod and "Windows Protection Error, System Must be restarted"

After much research, I found out that M$ has an article on their site that explains that under Win 9x, cards with the Riva128 will cause Windows to hang if you attempt to use them in a dual-monitor setup...

So, I'm pretty sure there's nothing I can do to fix it, but was wondering if anybody had a trick up their sleeve...

The system:
K6-2 500, 128mb, WD 30gb 7200 rpm ATA 100 hd, 52X CDROM (both on an ATA100 card), PCChips mobo w/integrated sound and VIA MVP3 Chipset, Linksys NIC, US Robotics Modem

As you can see, this is not a cutting edge system, I wouldn't have even bothered with the second vidcard if it hadn't been free and I didn't already have an extra 15" monitor sitting on the floor gathering dust...

I can get the sytem to work fine in ME with the Vanta card disabled in Device Manager, so I'm really no worse off than before, but if anybody has any ideas, I'd be interested, thanks...

Well, I guess M$ made some improvement to ME in the realm of dual-monitor support since the card now works...all I had to do was reinstall both operating systems and take out my network card (back to using the usb ethernet adapter I got from the cable company)

Apparently, there was a memory allocation problem with the nic and the secondary video card since they were sharing an irq (although windows didn't identify any conflicts) whichever one was installed first worked just fine...anyway, thanks to anyone who read this one...
