View Full Version : VOCAL PROBLEMS ON VINYL

I'm currently transferring my vinyl LP's onto CD-R, using Easy CD Creator, along with Sound Forge/CD Architect & Wave Studio.
The problem I'm having is that on some of the vocal tracks, when words with 'S' are being sung, the 'S' is over emphasised - so, for instance, the word 'cars' sounds more like 'carsssss', 'dogs' sounds more like 'dogssss', etc.
This is only happening to a few of the LP's but now that I've noticed it, it's really driving me mad!!
I've tried using the various filters on Sound Forge, but this hasn't helped much.
I would be greatful for any ideas on this.
I'm guessing that the transfer is exagerating an already existing problem, I've dealt with enough vocalist who did that and other annoying things when singing to know that many of them could use a quick course in pronunciation techniques....I don't know if there is a "de-esser" filter available for SoundForge but that is what you are after. Since you are recording stereo tracks you don't really have the option to go and limit the vocal tracks and anything applied would impact the whole mix.
I'll see if I can find anything else later and someone else may come along with some other ideas so hang in there....

You got me listening to the radio and finding all the faults with the music, again! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
No seriously, I had some errands to run after I posted and I noticed that a couple of popular songs, at least one of which made it fairly high on the charts, had "ess" problems.....
I guess that I have just been ignoring problems because if I don't then I might as well not listen...but yeah it really drives me nuts, too. (It won't be a very long drive....)

Tango down!
Have you tried playing the records on another turntable to find out if you get the same results? (Might be hard to find somebody with one) Your needle and cartridge you have a resonant frequency that is distorting the sound at a certain frequency.
Records were also recorded with RIAA equalization, which emphasized high frequencies during recording, then the playback system reduced them. Depending on your setup, it may not reduce the high frequencies properly. http://arts.ucsc.edu/EMS/Music/tech_background/TE-19/teces_19.html

Should have said, "Your needle and cartridge may have a resonant frequency that is distorting the sound at a certain frequency."
