Whatever I try, i cannot record from my microphone. When I do, the sound from the microphone comes out my speakers instead of recording. If I am using a program with an input meter - like windows sound recorder - the meter does not move at all. Win 98 SE btw.

please help
thanx

Open the volume controls ( right click the little yellow speaker by the clock) and see if the mic is selected (options ->properties -> recording controls).

Actually, I thought that would be the first reply - thanx - but...
the record controls look like the playback controls in that there is no "select" check box but instead, "mute" check boxes - all of which can be checked or unchecked at the same time. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

I tried reinstalling win 98 (over the top, from dos) but no difference ...

Are you sure you're in Recording Controls? I have Mute in the playback and Select in Recording. Open the main volume controls and go to Options\Properties and check the radio button for Recording Controls. If it does not have a button inside it you're still in Playback.

If the sound is coming out of your speakers, the mic definitely works, but the signal is only being sent through Playback, not Recording, and that's usually where the probem is. If you were plugged into the wrong jack you would not get sound through the speakers, so you must have it plugged in correctly. That only leaves the Recording Controls...I can't find anything else.

The microsoft link is quite informative - I can never find the one I want when I want it - thanx - but I am still no better off http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

As I said, I don't have select - just mute in the record panel - and it seems to make no difference to anything what is muted and what is not. I am starting o think that this is where my problem lies click here (http://www.innerweb.com.au/help.htm) to see a picture of my record panel. I am familiar with how it should look (I checked a friends) but how do I get a normal record panel ??

thanx http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Assuming your picture is just for an example, and you
already know that the mute box is checked under mic. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

What's on your friend's panel that isn't on yours?

Can you try to use your microphone on that system?

I guess I should have unchecked the mute for the picture - but it makes no difference - the point of the picture is to show it says 'mute' and not 'select' as it should. The microphone works fine on the other system.

Let's start from scratch.

Right-click the speaker icon by the clock, click Adjust Audio Properties.
The Playback device should say 'out, the Recording 'in'. If so click Cancel.

Right-click the icon again, click Open Volume Controls.
Click Options, then Properties. Click Playback, un-check the Microphone box if it's checked.

Click Recording, check the Microphone and the Line-in boxes if they're unchecked. Click OK.

OK - back to the beginning.... the problem is that my record panel appears to be messed up. Instead of having a bunch of check boxes with select it has mute - the same as the playback panel. Whether i check, or uncheck 'mute' for microphone in the record panel makes no difference. Everything else appears as it should, and all settings are as they should be. It's just that I can't seem to 'select' the microphone as there is no select box for me to check. How do I reinstall the mixer control panel ??

If I understand you correctly, you need to go to "Add/Remove Programs" in Control Panel........remove "Volume Control" in "Multimedia Devices" and reinstall it.

No good - still no 'select' boxes in the record panel.
Is there such a thing as an aftermarket mixer control which I can use to select the device from which I want to record ??

Which jack is the microphone plugged into?

Right click the speaker icon, click Open Volume Controls.
Click Options, click Properties, click the Recording radio button.
In the lower pane, which items are checked, and which are unchecked?

Thankyou to everyone who has tried to help me - and to everyone that has helped me in this forum in the past - but I am obviously not getting my problem across very well

My microphone is plugged in correctly - and is not faulty - and I know how to use the recording panel on my audio mixer - but it is not working as it should...

- so I will take my computer and throw it off a cliff http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif
OK, maybe I'll just format and reinstall everything.......

cheers

If you throw it off the cliff first, at least you won't have
to go through the hassle of re-installing everything. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

thanks for that, but this is an ongoing problem which has defied me for months. Nothing works - tried reinstalling windows (but not reformatting) tried other microphones etc etc etc....

Maybe the sound card has a bad "record/mic" module???
