Funny thing... I have been reading this computer stuff for a while now. And there's something that has been bothering me that... Well... I have to get it off of my chest.
My Dad has been actively involved with computers through engineering and IT in and of itself for over 15 years now. Well, we were having one of our usual 'tek-head' discussions the other day. We were discussing the 'BIOS'. And everytime he says the word 'BIOS', he pronounces it 'BYE-OHS', with a pronounced long 'O' followed by a short 'S'. That bugs me.
All of my computer books say it's pronounced 'BYE-OHS'(Same as Dad). Other people I talk to call it the 'BYE-OHS'! Same as Dad... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Now, the funny thing is, I have been pronouncing the word incorrectly for several years now [according to Dad and everyone else in the world. <smile>]. But there has been a reason I've been so steadfast in my support of the pronunciation of the word 'B-I-O-S' as 'BYE-AWS'(short 'A' sound followed by a short 'S').
You see... Several years ago, I was watching a documentary about how the computer industry developed in the '80s. And during one particular segment, there were a bunch of attorneys working for MS interviewing the people who were being assigned the task of reverse engineering a ROM 'BYE-AWS'. I just figured that all of those people in the documentary *MUST* be pronouncing the word correctly. The **MUST**! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif I mean MS execs, programmers, engineers and attorneys, right? How can that be wrong?!
But I never thought about the fact that I might just remember it incorrectly. So... Am I right? Or am I wrong?
LMAO! Aw-hell... It's always the infinitecimal details that get me going!! LMAO!
Help me out here, folks. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Much love and respect... Cory
