I recently purchased a US Robotics external modem (56K V90 Faxmodem). The modem is working perfectly, much faster than my old Winmodem which was on the machine. I went to the Control Panel and uninstalled the old modem, and unpluged the line. The problem is, that everytime I boot the machine, I get a box from PCI Communications Device that says a new modem is decteted, and installs drivers for it. It is the OLD modem which I removed! So then I go to the modem icon in the Con. Panel and remove it. I know I shouldn't have to do this everytime. What do I do to keep this from occuring? I am using Win98SE. Thanks very much for help on this!!

When you say "removed", did you actually take the old modem out of the slot? If it was left in, it will keep getting redetected.

Reid: I did not physically remove the old modem, just unplugged the telephone line from it, and removed it in the add/remove section of the control panel. I was under the impression that was all I had to do. Do I have to actually remove it from the case, and if so, anything else I should do while I'm in there? I really appreciate the help!!!

Yeah you've got to physically remove the old modem from the case. Otherwise it will keep asking to be re-installed or use up one maybe two IRQs and some other system resorces and maybe even cause device conflicts even though it is not being used (if it gets re-installed). One advantage is that it will free up an expansion slot (PCI) so you'll have room to put in something else.

If you need help getting it out post back nad I'm sure we can help with the procedure.

Yep, I'll agree...pull it. As long as it's still in the slot it will keep being redetected.
