View Full Version : My display's gone green

I don't know what happened. My screen was perfectly normal - I went out of the room for a few minutes and when I came back the colour had a green cast over it. Basically, what that means is that everything which should look white looks light green! I'm not sure how to resolve it. I tried updating the driver but apparently the best one is installed.

Help!! Anybody got any ideas??

There are a couple of things that cause this and drivers aren't one of them....one is magnetic interferrence, look for any close magnetic source...like a speaker got moved closer to the monitor, another is it's time for the degauss button to be used (if your monitor has one...otherwise find a shop to do it or a degaussing coil) or the red color gun has died (the least desirable and most costly...usually cheaper to buy a new one, unless it is still under warranty)

Thanks....I had tried the degauss button but unfortunately it had no effect! Speakers were in their original position - I've tried moving them away - but no joy. I think you're suggestion about the red colour gun? may be what it is. Could you please tell me more about what that actually means? Do you mean it would be cheaper to buy a new monitor or a new red colour gun? The monitor is three years old now - so out of warranty.

Thanks again.

New monitor....here in the States it would probably be some where between $50 and $100 for parts and 2 to 4 hours labor at about $45 ++/hour...so you are looking at $140 to $280 to try to repair it. Or to replace the CRT it would cost about the same but high price would be parts...and sometimes when the color gun goes (there are three of them, one for red, one for blue and one, for green) the rest will follow soon...other times it will run green for years....

The other thing to look at is the size and age of it, if it is small (like less than 17") and over five years old then it most definitley time to replace it.

Wiggle the cable where it plugs into the back of the computer. If it turns back to normal you have a bad connection. This monitor does it now and then, but it turns light purple...occasionally green, but usually purple. Also try it where it comes out of the back of the monitor.

Thanks mjc and pete. Have now tried wiggling the cable at both ends - no joy. I reckon it's a new monitor for me. I was actually considering upgrading my system - so maybe now's a good time! While I make up my mind I'll just have to get used to looking at cyberworld in this bilious shade of green.

Funny thing is that when I use the colour adjustment buttons on the front it is perfectly possible to reduce the blue and green to the extent that the screen turns light red!

Then it is not entirely dead yet...just play with the buttons a little and you may get a few more months out of it with it being only slightly green.

I've messed with the buttons a bit, but it's still a sort of greeny yellow...so I guess it'll be a new monitor....I'm thinking of going over to a TFT monitor to free up a bit of desk space....I want something that'll replace this 19" - I presume TFT comes in 19"....anybody got any experience of what's a good make with a good clear display?
