AMD Duron 750. 196mb on board sound card.

Can't record sound, or at least can only hear a mumble in the background after turning up the volume.

I have gone into multimedia properties (to set recording level by clicking on mike icon) but the mike icon is not active.

Via Audio (Wave)(1) is set at the moment, other options are..,

(use any available device)
Game compatable device
Voice Modem Wave #00 line
Voice Modem Wave #00 handset

None of these makes the mike icon active.

VIC,

Not sure how your volume controls are set up with the on board sound. On my SB if I right click and open the taskbar sound icon I can open the volume controls. I go to OPTIONS>PROPERTIES and then I have 2 options for play or record settings. Also there is a window for selecting which of the volume controls I want active...Don't know if this helps, but if there are similarities you might be able to activate the Mic Volume Control in this manner.

Yes it is similar.

The problem appeared to be a corrupt driver, so I re-installed the sound card and all is well. The mic record level is locked though and the tone controls are not active, I think that's down to sound card quality, but I can live without them at present. when I've played with it a bit may consider upgrading s/c.
