I have a homemade computer with Windows 98 first edition on it. I installed a PCI sound card and when it asked for the Windows 98 CD, I put in the Windows 98 2nd edition by mistake. It accepted it and then when it asked for the sound card drivers, I inserted the CD for the sound card and installed the drivers. However, there isn’t any sound. I rebooted for grins and the speaker makes a clicking noise but still no sound. I inserted a music CD and was able to hear the music fine. In Device Manager, everything looks fine, no exclamation marks. How do I get the sound to work? Does it matter if I used the Windows 98 2nd edition instead of the 1st edition? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if it's coming thru the sound card then try reattatching the cables to to the sound card or mobo just to make sure connection is made solid. check your mixer settings.this a seperat card or on board

Hi Tom,
Hmmmm, I don't get it. You say you can hear music fine, but you have no sound. What sounds don't you have? If you are talking Windows sounds, go to Start>settings>control panel>sounds and multimedia, and see if you have a sound scheme selected.
It should not matter if you used the 2nd Ed. disk. It will have the same basic driver support. If anything it would be better.

Don’t hear any Windows sounds. I will reseat the sound card and check the sound scheme to see if that works. Will let you know if that works. Thanks for responding.
