View Full Version : PC locking up after installing GeForce256!!!!

I have recently fitted a GeForce256 32Mb SDR card to my system.
After uninstalling the ATI drivers for my previous Rage 128,I
downloaded drivers from nVidias website. The drivers I got were
Version 21.83.
I am now having a problem which manifested itself almost immediately
after I installed the card and the drivers, and which was not present
before.
Games run fine,with no problems,however,when I am on the net,after a
short time online my PC locks up.I can still move the mouse pointer
around, but nothing is able to be clicked on.Then, eventually, the mouse
pointer freezes.
The only way to get out of this is to switch off the PC and run
Scandisk.Some times CTRL+ALT+DEL works,but not very often.
Anyone have any ideas about what is going on here?.Or how to sort
it out?.Do you reckon I should download the new set of drivers which
is out,V 22.40 or v22.50?.
I believe this is a problem relating to the new card and drivers
as this never happened before with my ATI card.
My system is as follows:-PIII500,384Mb RAM,13Gb H/D,W98se and as I
have said a GeForce 256 32Mb SDR card.
This is driving me mad!!!.Please help!!!

fiery,
most likely it is either your drivers or the card itself is incompatiable with your motherboard. there are one of two things that you can try, first you can go into the display drivers through control panel and disable your plug and play monitor or/and you default monitor. second you can try the newest drivers but it might be difficult if you cant stay online for a while. best bet in that case is to have a friend download them and email them to you. unfortunately i had the reverse problem with an ati card not working with my amd processor. let me know how it works out.

Thanx Gemini_blade.
I seem to have sorted it out now.I had the 22.40 drivers installed, but after looking thru LOADS of forums on this subject,I decided to get rid of them using Detonator Destroyer and install the 12.90 drivers. They seem quite stable and I doubt I would benefit from using the 22.50 drivers anyway,as my card is one of the early GeForce256`s.I believe the latest drivers, although they are supposed to work with every GeForce, are optimised for the GeForce 3 etc.Anyhow`s,my games are still running well, and I have`nt had any problems with the net locking up.I`ll keep my fingers crossed!!!.

Thank u.I`ll bear your offer of help in mind. This is one of the better, more responsive forums available.I dont like flaming people or forums,BUT,I posted a query on the tweaking board at Guru3D,and was told basically that If I had to ask for help, then I should`nt be trying to play around or tweak my stuff anyway!!!!.That kinda attitude sucks dontcha think?.We all gotta learn somehow!!!.

Don't let it get you down too much...if those guys over there would just remember how much they screwed up when they first started....anyway, glad you actually found what you needed.
