not sure what to test first. i was on my way by the p.c last night and noticed the screen was full of racing black and yello lines. they would also turn a red color. i had to turn the p.c off several times without doing the shut down mode, but the monitor would not turn off, without unplugging it. after i plugged the monitor back it, it would do it's check and say it was find. i could re-boot the p.c and get everything back to normal. but it would do it again after awhile (like while i was triing to scan for viruses). so if it works some of the time, is it likelt the kds monitor, the video card, or a blurp in power or what? the only thing i've done differently in the last week is to add a digital mouse and download a mp3 player.---not sure if this is related but the p.c wouldn't connect to the cable modem the day before and there was some message briefly about checking power source? dunno....

Try the degauss button on your monitor and see if that helps. If not put another video card in there, but with those hps your modem sound and video are probably on the same card. I would give hp a call and see if you can get a refund or exchange, if its under warranty that is.
If you cant i would try another video card , before a new monitor.
so its either your video card or monitor.

6350...maybe all on one but probably the video is onboard video and a modem/sound combo...onboard pci (SIS chipset), modem is separate from audio (also onboard...Crystal 4237).

So quite possibly you will need to find a PCI videos card and disable the onboard video, but there are also a couple of other things to try...does this do this in DOS mode? Try the monitor on a different machine...if it continues on the other machine then it is the monitor. If the monitor works on another machine, try a different monitor on the problem one. Make sure that the vidoe cable is firmly connected and hasn't worked loose.
