I have a PIII 500. When we left for the holidays, I turned off the PC and then unplugged it. Two weeks later when we returned, I plugged it back in and tried to power it up. I got no post, no beeps, no video. The fans turned on and the cd-rom and the cd-burner both lit up for a couple of seconds then everything but the fans stop. The computer was running great when we left and it hasn't been touched since. I have reseated the memory, processor, cards, and checked the connections. What should I be looking for as far as possible shorts go? Is there a systematic, efficient way I should be going about troubleshooting it?

Hi 1world,

I can offer no explanation, except to say i have virtually EXACTLY the same problem, i have a PIII 450 on a Chaintech board, went away for the weekend, switched it on on Monday and blip!! nothing. The only difference is that mine has an annoying siren sound. I have gutted it, tried a new PSU but still no joy, no video, no nothing. I have got it down to either the Chip or the mobo being the problem, but don't know how to figure out which without great expense.

Sorry i can't help either m8y

Sorry to post on your problem without an answer but I also have the same problem. A network guy came in and reseated my ram chip in a different slot and that worked for a while until I went on vacation and came back, it started up fine but within an hour it froze up and now won't boot up at all. I would like to know if there is a way to check to see if it is the chip or the mobo. Good luck to us all!

Have you tried clearing the CMOS data in BIOS ? There should be a jumper to clear the CMOS.
If you do that then you have to redo all of your BIOS settings again. Make sure you turn off power switch at the back before reset CMOS.

I mean to say Motherboard, not BIOS. Its the same where you can reset the password. It should be in your MOBO manual.
