I have a Compaq Presario 7110US running Windows ME, a NVIDA Ge Force 2 MX video card which came installed with the machine, and a generic monitor from my old PC, 17" Cybermax Plug & Play montior which has worked fine with my Compaq until today.
I did a system restore using Windows ME (which I have done in the past without issue) due to some buggy software (Tweak IE 3) to a prior time & now I can't get the monitor to display a resolution above 640x480 AND under My Computer, Properites, Device Manager, it shows I have TWO monitors, which I don't. For both monitors it says, "No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device." The OS doesn't recognize my monitor as a Plug & Play monitor, which it is. It has recognized it in the past without a problem. Going into the Control Panel, Display, I can't change the resolution at all.

-First, I tried removing the video card & both monitors from the sytem in Windows from the Device Manager...that didn't work. Then I booted into Safe Mode & tried doing the same thing....that didn't work either.

-Then I tried updating the driver for the video card...that didn't work either.

-Then I did a complete Factory Restore, returning the PC to its original factory set-up. That didn't work either.

-Then I tried the Safe Mode option again...that didn't work either.

The machine is only a few months old & Compaq suggested I take it into the shop for service. I hate to be without my PC for who-knows-how-long & I feel the problem must be in the software.

What else can I try to fix the problem?

Hi dreamspinner3, Welcome to the forum

Sounds like you've done everything that makes sense. The only thing I noticed is you didn't mention a driver for the monitor - it wouldn't hurt to try to find one even if it is plug and play.

My gut feeling is that maybe the system restore didn't fully take care of your buggy software

In the past, Windows always found a driver in its database without a problem. But I do have the original hardware driver disk for the old PC, so maybe it is on there. I could try that. Otherwise, Cybermax is out of business & I can't contact them for a driver for the monitor.

Looks like some folks realized the problem and have updated/archived the drivers for your system.

You might find what your looking for HERE. (http://www.idealpcsystems.com/home.htm)

Sounds like you really want to get to the "root of this one"....
As long as you're trying everything, find out how to navigate to C:\windows\cabs, for the windows setup files.

Perform a "clean install",leaving any printers or scanners unplugged...

Good luck......
