SYSTEM: dell 4100 desktop, win98 2nd, nvidia GeForce DDR AGP (DELL)64 MB
PROBLEM: when and only when an application is running on my desktop, the desk top image is corrupted ( it looks like a colored topographical map with strange concentric lines and dots). the application image is fine. the desktop image returns to normal as soon as there are no appliction images on the desktop. this occurs regardless of the desktop image and whether the image is stretched or letterbox.
DIAGNOSIS: when I run window's Dr. Watson it says:nvidia compatable windows 95/98 display driver version 3.77 does not appear to be a windows 95 plug and play driver. this is the only problem Dr. Watson finds. I called Dell and they told me this was the correct and most updated driver for my video card. I reinstalled the driver from Dell's Cdrom. this driver is the original driver that came with the machine but only in the last few days has this video corruption been a problem and once it developed it has been constant.

Not quite sure of what your problem is, but the "not a PnP driver" is pretty much normal....basically it means that the particular driver is not certified by MS to be 100% compatable with the PnP features of a particular version of Windows, not that there is anything wrong with it just that MS hasn't bothered to test, or the manufacturer hasn't submitted it for testing....also not sure but I think that you can use the regular nVidia drivers with your card (some of the others may have a better idea on that one...)

g.a....

We've all had good luck with the Detonator series drivers. Old drivers need to be removed.

Go to nVidia website or www.bootdisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com) . Drivers/popular/video/nVidia.

I thank both mjc and ranchdog. I installed the nvidia datonator driver and my desktop image is fine again. Could you tell me about "geeks" and their insignia? Thank you again, george allen

An excellant sight to keep up with Nvidia's drivers release ( and other info to video cards ) is Guru3d (http://www.guru3d.com).

Are you asking about our signatures?

GA,

I'm gonna take a leap of faith here and surmise that you are referring to the small icons below the "Geeks" assigned level of incompetence! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Humor is good! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Seriously, the icons are just representative of a specific number of posts and/or responses of a particular Geek. They are not necessarily representative of computer competence or accuracy in troubleshooting, rather the devotion a Geek has to assisting others with their computer needs on the Forum.

I don't know that we are privy to the number of posts necessary to receive additional recognition via an icon, they just seem to appear in direct proportion to ones diligence. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

In my case they were given to me in an attempt to shut me up.... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif (psssst, didn't work!)

They are, exactly like Whyzman said, a direct reference to how many posts you have, and hopefully when you have many, many posts you will have gained some measure of expertise to go with all those fancy doodads......
