Here is a question, which I dont think I have seen asked before,on any forums.
I have,at present,a GeForce 256 32Mb SDR card sitting in my AGP slot. You know, the very first GeForce card from about `99.
I am having a GeForce 2 GTS 32Mb DDR card delivered next week.
My question is,because the drivers work right accross the range of GeForce cards, and are not card specific, can I take the easy route of just opening the case, removing the 256 and fitting the GeForce 2 GTS?.Then,re-booting and all will be okay?.No need to uninstall my existing driver and boot to safe mode to remove stuff etc, etc.
I am using DET Version 12.90,as I found the later drivers to be unstable and not as reliable with the 256.
Please tell me this is the case,as I cant be bothered going thru all the new drivers stuff!!!!,if I dont have to!!!.

Well, "going through all the new drivers stuff" really isn't all that difficult. Boot into Safe Mode, remove old video card, shut down and install new one, reboot and let Windows find it. Have the driver disk handy. In some cases you can install the drivers right off the disk, if Windows does not open the installation wizard.
If, as you say, the drivers are basically the same across the board, I don't think it would hurt to try it and see, you can always go through the process above and reinstall it if necessary.
I would go ahead and bite the bullet, remove the old one and install the new one properly, it's not difficult and doesn't take long. If it took several days I might feel a bit different...

I`m going to try out just fitting the new one and switching back on.If only for my own curiosity.
Like you say,if it does`nt work,I can always go back and do it the proper way.

Hey,
There is a chance, not sure how great, that the old drivers will work OK with the new card. However, the old drivers may not give you the full capability of the new vid card.
The new card should come with a driver and software CD. My advice is to bite the bullet and install the driver that will come with the new card. Then, remove the old drivers and the ghost listing that will result.
Cheers,

Even if I was just going to pick my nose I'd do it the proper way.

Yes, it might work perfectly since you are using a Detonator series driver already, but as someone else already mentioned, you may not get the full use of the newer card with the old driver. Plus since ceratin ID info on the cards will be different Windows may just prompt for new drivers anyway...and then you'll have the "ghost driver" issue to contend with...I would agree with everyone else...bite the bullet and reinstall.

Most definately change out your drivers!!
The dets are built to respond to specific chipsets; ie..MX, GTS,Ti, etc..and you will not get the proper function out of your Vid card without installing and initializing the registry for the proper chipset id.
You'll be crippling your system by not doing a fresh install of the drivers for it to recognize your proper GPU. I would also recommend using Detonator destroyer to remove all Nvidia files when you remove the drivers before installing the new ones.
The reason the 256 doesn't respond well to the newest drivers is because it's a different type of Chip build-even the newest MX chips will perform or in some cases outperform it with the proper instruction set.
I use a G3Ti500 on my main system and i have an MX400 on one of my old systems-i saw a 25% improvement in performance in it when updating to the latest drivers. My old Geforce2 Pro however lagged with the newest ones.
It's a case of finding the right drivers for your particular system setup-no two are the same, you'll just have to experiment to find the one(s) that work best for you.
But definately start off with a clean slate. No need to ask for trouble if you don't have to.

Well!!!!!.Look at all these responses!!!!.Thanx for all your advice guys.
Ok,I knew I would be better doing a clean install.Your right.Thats what I will do.So far the response to my question on the MadOnion.com forum about the best driver for GeForce2 GTS has came back with a majority who seem to think that 23.11 is the best.
Anyone concur with that?.Or as you say,is it down to individual system spec?.

I am not sure what the problem is you are all talking about, I have fairly recent Detenators installed in my systems. I have moved my TNT2-M64 boards willy nilly between my systems while looking for the best home for my new GF2-GTS board. So as long as his Detenators are some what recent he should be able to plug in the new board and be up and running.
Now you can go get the latest greatest drivers and see what changes.
integral.....his version "DET Version 12.90"...older one, right?
And like I said it might work, then again it may limit the card because of certain features that are in the newer drivers that aren't in the older ones.....(one of the newest if not the newest is Version 23.11)...so I still say change 'em!
