View Full Version : Microphone and full duplex issues

Ok, my problem is that I can't get my sound card to be full duplex. I know that its full-duplex capable though since it worked perfectly before I formatted last month. I get that "unable to initialize wave.. blah blah mmsystem004.. etc" stuff when I join a server. I have a C-Media sound card with the M770LMRT chipset. THis sound card is integrated into my motherboard.
I've worked on this problem for hours and hours and I just can't figure it out. I searched for related problems on these very forums as well but turned up with nothing useful. When I use the half-life voice tweak thing, it scans my hardware just fine but when I go to speak in it afterwards, nothing gets recorded and it gives me a message saying I can't talk in the game.

So here is a list of things I've done so far:

-Verified that my mic works. It's plugged in fine and I can record my voice and everything.

-Updated the drivers. I've tried about 4 different drivers and none of them helped except for the one that I got using windows update. It worked and I could talk again, but I got rid of it because the sound quality was awful and it really ate up resources for some reason. I've tried to get these drivers back anyway, but have had no success.

-Tried other software. I can't talk using other programs like Roger Wilco and Battlecom either.

-Checked my audio settings. My mic is muted in the playback settings. The mic (and only the mic) is selected in the recording settings. Theres no option for full duplex anywhere in my computers setup. I tried the microphone booster option only to find that it makes my speakers make a loud high-pitched whining. Theres a whole whack of stuff on SPDIF in my audio settings but I have no idea what it is or what it does so I haven't touched it.

I think thats all I can say right now. Thanks for reading this and if you have any help to give me at all, I greatly appreciate it.

What do you mean by: "I've tried to get these drivers back anyway, but have had no success."? They are no longer available for down load?

Also what version of Windows are you running?

Boot into safe-mode and see if there is more than one listing for the sound card....if so remove them all and reboot, letting Windows reintsall the sound card...possibly it will find the driver files from Windows update

Hi, thanks for responding.

I'm running Windows 98 Second Edition.

And yes, the drivers don't seem to be available for download anymore. When I run the windows update it doesn't do anything anymore. I really don't want those drivers anyway though since the sound is so horrible and my system becomes so unstable. Besides, prior to formatting, I was just using the plain drivers that came with my system so I shouldn't have to use the ones from Microsoft.

As far as the safe mode stuff goes, I've completely removed all listings for the sound card and let windows reinstall them many times and it never helps.

On Windows Update there should be an option to show you the downloads you have already made...that is where you find the drivers you don't really want, but kind of work.....

Where is this option to view the stuff I've already downloaded? After I try to update my drivers using windows update, it recommends that I keep the current driver. Below that there IS an option to install other drivers but theres only one on that list and its not the one I'm looking for.

Anyway I was thinking, is it possible that I have an IRQ conflict or something? If so, how can I check for that?

Ok...I thought you were going to the Windows Update site through your browser (the desktop, start menu icon) not in the device properties...the option is there, not on the device propeties update link http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif .

So back to the real problem...finding a good set of drivers for your sound....

Is this on-board sound or an actual sound card?

And the drivers that weren't working properly were they WDM drivers?

Ok I went to that Windows Update site through your way instead of the device manager and the driver I used before isn't there. I have no installation history either since I used the device manager the first time.

I have on-board sound.

As far as them being WDM drivers... I think they were, though I can't remember for sure. If it helps, the drivers could play more than one thing at a time, unlike all the other drivers I had. For instance I could be playing an mp3 and then hear an ICQ message at the same time. That feature was the only thing I liked about them, actually.

Ok....see that now...integrated sound, missed it the first time around.

Have you tried locating drivers at the manufactuer's site (motherboard)?

Here (http://www.pcchips.nl/support/driverupdates/Sound/sound.htm) is a driver download page....PcChips versions.

My problems are over. I actually had that link before and tried the drivers on that initial page but I never did go to the C-Media website. Anyway, I tried the WDM drivers made by C-media and they seem to be working fine. The sound quality is adequate, my mic works, and there doesn't seem to be any instability to speak of. I guess those Microsoft ones just weren't very compatible. So thanks a lot man. You fixed my problem.
