Hi, here's the situation;

older noname pc running win98se with only 16MBs {EDO), installed in a pair of two 8MB sticks RAM.

Go to upgrade with another pair of 8MB sticks (EDO), so that the pc will now have 32MB's right?


Now, pc has NO video, the green light is on showing it's getting some type signal from the computer but no video display at all.

Have {{carefully}} put in the two original 8MB sticks and STILL no video.

**note**- they only can go in one way correctly.

also when booting the keyboard lights all three: Num Lock, Caps lock, and Scroll lock are lit up, keyboard unresponsive.

ideas, please- this should be something simple I'm missing.

I saw this right before dinner...

When you put the new RAM in did you go into BIOS and save the new configuration?

On those older boards that was almost a necessitity to do that, you may have to clear the CMOS and try again.

hi

no I have not been able to get a screen to even see the BIOS.

and trying the old ones has no effect.

no other changes.

have tried all different combinations of RAM sticks including original.

It was running A-OK before you messed with the RAM?

Hmmm...how bout trying only one stick, rather than combinations, at a time...Maybe not sufficient for Windows to load...but might get you into POST?

yes it ran ok but slow.

have tried all combinations of ram, one stick at a time.

have removed and then reseated the video card- the monitor is working (on other machine)

As I recall.
Don’t they (early Pentium+ edo Memory) require you to install in pairs ,,

When all else fails go back to ground zero.
Barebones startup and test ..

I installed a second pair of 8MBs sticks, rebooted and no vid.

took them out still no vid.


thing is, nothing else was changed I know this, and it worked prior.

Try clearing the CMOS......probably have to pull the battery.

Probably doesn't have a lithium battery.... depends on how far
back you're going. May have one of those larger soldered in type.

And may not have a clear CMOS jumper. Look for a jumper marked J1.
It's used to clear memory.

Check to see if you knocked a jumper off on the motherboard while changing memory, and check for something shorting out on the chassis, a card or a drive bay. Also check any wires inside to be sure they didn't work loose.

Could always do the simple thing first try cleaning the slots the mem. inserts into and the mem. connectors them selves. If you havent already seems this is an older board?Just a thought.

thanks very much to all that replied!

I'm glad I didn't need to do what mjc suggested because I looked with a magnifying glass and a high powered flashlight and could not find the CMOS clear, J1, or anything like it!

thankfully, as Pete was sensible enough to point out- I had 'jiggled' a connector loose when getting the {{very difficult}} RAM seated correctly.

after a few hours of trying everything else, I moved some cables and saw this connector was plugged in, but not evenly- I firmly applied even pressure on it to seat it in there and VIOLA it works and shows 32Mb's RAM just as it's supposed to.
