I have a new Samsung SyncMaster 955DF 19" Monitor that is used for digital photo editing. On page 10 of the instruction manual 1280 x 1024/75 Hz is given as the recommended setting.
Am working with some large photo files and would like to try 1600 x 1200 but wonder if this could shorten the lifespan of the monitor?

1280 x 1024 is the standard for 19" viewing, just as 1024*768 is for 17" and 800*600 is for a 15" monitor.
i doubt you'l have any monitor problem's running it at 1600*1200, but it will depend as much on your video cards' capability as your monitor.
If your Vid card supports that hi a refresh rate then give it a shot, window's will test the new settings for 15 seconds, if there is a problemn it will revert back to it's native settings ( unless you say ok on the warning screen ).
My monitor ( a 17" samsung 753DF ) will only support up to 1280*1024 @ 85 Hz, you should have a higher capability on the 19".
