Hi everybody. I'm very new to computers so please be gentle with me.

My little problem is that since installing Real Player I'm now unable to play CD's & CD-R's. I used to play them on Windows Media player before uninstalling it. They played fine.
Real Player recognises there's a disc in the drive and goes through the motions of playing the disc but no sound.

There's also no 'spinning noise' coming from the CD drive. Any help would be great. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

redduffer999,

For some odd reason, installing new software sometimes messes with the sound controls in the Sound Control Panel.

Have you tried right clicking on the speaker icon located on the lower right of your screen? Once in there see if anything has become muted that might be affecting your audio.

Would you let us know if you've tried that or what you find?

Hi WHYZMAN thanks for the reply.

I did as you sggested and there was a check next to the line in balance. I've un-checked it but still no sound. Each time I put a new disc in the box re-checks itself!!!

I have Creative playcenter 2 on this PC but have Real Player selected on the Disc Detecter. Same symptoms on the Creative playcenter too. Very Strange.....

Could this be a conspiricy?

When you right-click do you also have an option to:Adjust Audio Properties. Check in the Sound Playback and see what device you have listed there. Should be your Audio Card.

Also, in the right-click: Open Volume Controls...click on options>properties and see which volume controls you might not have displayed.

Hmmm...

Let's have a look at Device Manager and see if there's anything abnormal going on there with your CD-ROM drive. Check for (!) in Device Manager. (Right-click My Compter on your Desktop, Properties>Device Manager.

Then would you post back with your findings?

Ok, you said it will play mp3 that are on the hard drive, what about .wav files? .mid?

Check the RealPlayer options, what formats is it set to play as default?

Does the disk autostart in Media Player? does Media Player list the tracks?

Hello I'm back after half a nights sleep and a full days work.

Hi mjc

In desperation I've uninstalled Real One Player and now running with Windows Media Player.

Now I can play audio CD's from my CD drive.............Why's that????

My girlfriend will now kill me 'cause she loved the dancing sheep!!

Thanks guys for your time & your help. I'm sure I'll come unstuck again in the near future. Great to know there are people like you out there to help.

Thanks again, Ian.

I have no idea why Real One didn't play CD's.
