you may need to download the DivX codecs.

if you just wanna make vcd's out of the video, i recommend Nero Burning ROM. its a free program at www.nero.com (http://www.nero.com) and it will automatically convert the video to the right format for vcd's for ya. i haven't gotten it to work with Divx movies, which it sounds like you have, because of the special codec, but its worth a try

You need a conversion tool from the format you have [.avi? to vcd -.mpg]

check http://www.divx-digest.com/software/index.html#encoding_conv

Is there a player that will play AVI files in Windows XP pro? Would a better soulution be to get a conversion program?

It doesn't seem to be working in xp. In fact it only plays windows media in the OS. Maybe I need to look closer at it's configuration. I emailed Microsoft and got not answer.

Lessa,

There are better players than WMP especially with Win XP, try using Rad Light or the BS Player also make sure you have the latest codec pack.

Nathaniel thanks for the links and the suggestions. I have tried the players you mentioned and the avi files still don't play the images. Most will play the sound. All versions of mpg play perfectly on my machine. I think I will try the conversion program.

Is there a chance though that the problem could be the video card? This machine is about two years old. I haven't opened the box to find out what card is in it. Not sure I could tell even if I did.

Oh thank you so much. Da Player works beautifully on these files. I have been downloading them and the extention is .avi but when I tried to open them in the new real player it said they were DVX. You were a great help.
