Distorted Windows sound

I have just installed windows 2000 on my reformatted hard drive, now all my windows associated sounds are distorted, but when I play an audio cd the playback is perfect, can someone please help me out the actual sound is awful.

The soundcard I have is a Creative Ensoniq Audio PCI

I would suspect that the drivers for the card are not properly installed or the correct version...try updated drivers.

Also check under the audio contols to make sure that the synth and/or wave volume levels are not maxed out....
