audio hiccups

After I have been on the internet for a while, any music or sound starts to hiccup and stutter. It even affects a music CD I might be trying to listen to while on the net. Even when I get off the net, the problem will sometimes persist and affect the audio on other programs I am trying to use.

Without going into great detail about my system at this point, I have a fairly new computer and the latest versions of IE, DirectX, and more than sufficient memory, RAM, etc. to do what I want with it.

This has become extremely annoying, and any help trying to track down the origins of this type of problem would be greatly appreciated!

It could be a number of different causes.

If you're running Win 98 [at least in my experience] it might to time to reformat.

Do you have a good sound card? If not, you might want to invest in one.

If it's only happening when you're on the net you might try using a different browser [Opera or Mozilla come to mind] or swapping out your modem/NIC. The latest versions of IE6 are known to be a bit buggy.

Thanks for your quick reply. I have a Dell 4100 about 1 1/2 years old. The sound card is a Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI with ES 1373 chipset, which came preinstalled in the computer. OS is WinME; I have upgraded from IE 5.5 which came preinstalled, to IE6. The problem started several months ago before I upgraded to IE6, and has persisted after that. I had hoped upgrading to IE6 might help, but it hasn't.

I also upgraded from the installed version of DirectX after starting to have hiccups, to the latest version, also with no effect.

I have kept current with all the upgrades through Microsoft's Windows Update service.

Have you ever heard of this problem before? I can't find any reference to it in other places I have looked. Is it possible that it is a hardware problem with the installed sound card being a suitable choice, but that it has malfunctioned?

Certainly seems like your hardware shouldn't be choking unless you're doing some heavy multitasking. Since you upgraded direct x you should probably check for the latest drivers for the audio card. Try a different browser and see if the problem persists.
