I have a problem with my CDRW at the moment & whilst checking everything out to cure it I came across a CDR which I made about 12 months ago whilst having a practice with a recording program.
on this CDR I sang a few songs down the mike, & recorded it onto the disc, it came out ok with good quality.
then having been engrossed in the instructions, I decided to experiment & recorded an mp3 over the top.
the mp3 played ok & I went onto something else.
I have just popped in the CD & media player appeared and the mp3 played.
opening up a window for the disc shows that ONLY the mp3 is on the disc
BUT when I open up CD Player & click play, the OLD recording plays.
--------------------
this hasn't help me find a cure for my problem, but I find it rather odd that CD Player can find (& play) audio data that has been written over.

I think Media Player is just covering it's ears once it hears your... no I won't go there JUST KIDDING! I cringe when I hear my own voice on recordings and that's why I stopped singing in church. I figure the parishioners will get their due in the afterlife and it's not my duty to administer it here on the third rock. LOL http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif
What format was the first recording? Is it recognizable by Media Player? The second guess would be: Can Media Player play 2 different formats consecutavely?
You wrote CDR disk not CDRW disk and therefore I'm assuming you have written the MP3 AFTER the voice file of whatever form (.WAV usually) and not 'recorded over' but recorded 'beyond' the first one. What version of Media Player are you using?

Yoda,
can't remember re formatting, but it was about 12 months ago.
Ted,
format for the first would be .wav
it is NOT recognised by media player (or anything else)
But: home CD player shows 4 tracks (but wont play anything) !!
It is in fact Recorded OVER. as I can play the mp3 (media player) & .wav (CD player) at the same time !!!!!!!
(ok the mp3 dominates, but they do play at the same time, & it is quite easy with both mp & cd on screen to switch between them.

If you are playing sounds simultaneously you must have used some sort of mixer to accomplish the stereo tracks. I haven't encountered yet but would assume that a regular burning software would reject a previously burned disc. Can you isolate one or the other by using balance, front or rear? What program did you use to burn? Again, is this a CDR or CDRW disc?

It's very strange. the first recording was done with some music software but was only a simple SINGLE track (actually there were 4 independant tracks, one after the other) but Mono.
second one was an mp3 d/l from the internet (the first & only time that I have done this)
I was only experimenting and did a 'burn' on top of the previous 'burn' expecting the disc to be rejected, but it wasn't.
I Didn't expect it to copy, nor to play, but it did.
the old 'burn' by this time had 'dissapeared'
I chucked the disc in a drawer and got on with other 'experiments' (forgetting about this one)
It has only emerged (12 months later) whilst I am trying to sort out the current problem.
Isolating one or other is done by using either media player (mp3) or windows CD player (.wav) but if I run both progs together then both of them play. the mp3 comes through loud, clear & continuous, whereas the .wav tends to stop & I have to click the play button, but it comes through loud & clear on all 4 tracks.
CD was burned using Adaptec CD Creator 4
the disc is CDR
-----------------------
like I said the home CD player displays 4 tracks (the original burn) (the second burn was only 1 track) but it wont play anything, so how does it read the 4 tracks UNDER the later burn.
-----------------------
this of course was all novice fumbling (with the basics) rather than someone who knew what they were doing, trying to 'create' something.
-----------------------
the current problem I have is something weird too
CD creator 4 has worked fine for 18 months, now it only goes through the motions, eventually stating "CD created successfully" but there is nothing on the CD. & I can re insert the disc, which shows as 'blank recordable Cd' & burn it again, but still nothing on it.
I un installed Creator 4 & installed Creator 5. but still the same problem (I even re installed windows) yet I am getting no conflicts, error messages or anything like that.
My feeling was that the laser lens was maybe dirty preventing the correct temperature for 'closing' (completing) the process. BUT Direct CD (packet writing) works fine, with both CDRW & CDR.
and;
the message boxes have changed, not the choices but the style, which were not in creator 4 before, nor did I see them in creator 5.
I guess I'll be making a few more coasters, whilst I try to sort it out.

Since its a CDR it must have been burned after and not over since no reformatting can have occurred. The two tracks that you hear simultaneously from two different applications can only be happening by having first read both tracks and then (after buffering) play them simultaneously. I'm willing to bet that if you start those applications at different times the "mixing" will no longer be identical, since it's not a true mix. Well thats my two cents.

sounds like the CD writer is "worn out"?
mine is displaying the same symptoms, almost the same amount of time- (venture to guess use as well)

Like Paul says having 2 different programs open is merely like having 2 needles on a phonograph at the same time and not a true stereophonic recording but just listening to 2 tracks at once.
The fact that you cannot play the tracks on your home theater or in a vehicle the CD must not have been closed properly. Even though the burner 'sounds like' it may be worn out, once you have another burner you can properly close the CD, or several if this is the case, later to then work on your home stereo vehicle + etc.
But it does sound like you inadvertently discovered a little trick you could use for a DJ mixer. Roll with it. Take it on the road, make business cards, do weddings and use the pay to get you another burner LOL. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I've yet to wear out my burner but I would think they'd last a bit longer like SEVERAL years. Time will tell.

well I've just burned 3 CDs on Cd copier, so it looks like it's working again (at least for now) but no idea why.
Now if I can just re create the trick with the CD !!!!!!!!!!!
