When I load a CD, the light comes on for a few seconds but the program does not auto load. When I go to My Computer and click on the drive I get a window indicating "the drive is not ready". I have gone through the troubleshooting section on this site (which is the best I have seen), cleaned the drive and even replaced the ribbon cable without success. This drive I installed myself after the one that came with the computer failed. It worked fine for a 6 months and now has problems. Interesting to note that if I press the "retry" button on the window that pops up when I try to access the drive many times, eventually it will load and run without a problem. It also plays music CD's just fine. Am I to the point where I need to install another new drive?

Do audio disks play automatically? If so, then the Auto Insert Notification setting of the CD drive is enabled. If it is enabled, but does not auto-run data CDs, you could try TweakUI (http://www.annoyances.org/win98/features/tweakui.html). It has the capability to enable data and audio AIN separately, and may allow the AIN to be enabled for data CDs.

There might also be slippage which is delaying the spin-up of the CD. This
CD-ROM (http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles%2F1998%2Fdec98%2F1234 %2F1234%2Easp) link covers this and other operational problems.

Audio CD's run automatically just fine. Just data discs have the problem. I have already opened the drive and cleaned the rubber disc that spins the CD, so slippage does not appear to be the issue. Will look up the tweak software you mentions and see what that does. Thanks for you help.

Check in Device Manager and see if DMA is enabled or disabled, try it both ways. I have DMA disabled and mine works fine usually, except for reading a few burned data CD's as audio tracks...can't figure that one out...
