View Full Version : Disk I/O error

I have just formatted my HDD and reinstalled win98. When i boot up it says Disk I/O error just before loading windows. The HDD works perfectly in another computer but i get this problem with mine... please can someone help me

Have you gone into the BIOS setup and checked the drive settings? You may need to have it 'auto-detect' your 'new' hard drive. Also make sure that c: drive is listed as a boot device. Sorry these are 'reaching' suggestions. Maybe someone else will have a better idea of what's going on.

Also make sure the ribbon cable is installed correctly, and power supply cable is plugged in and fully seated.

The colored stripe on the ribbon cable should be oriented toward the #1 pin on both controller and drive.

Check the jumpers on the drive, if it's the only drive in the machine it should be set as Master, and you might try Cable Select, some boards like that setting better. It's often listed as CS on the drive's label.

Just to be sure, also make sure the drive is on the end of the cable, although either plug should work. The two plugs closer together are where the drive(s) plug in, the longer end should plug into the controller on the motherboard. And make sure nothing is one pin off. That is especially easy to do on the motherboard, most don't have a housing, and often it's hard to see.
