OOOooooohkeydoekey...

I'm buildin a 'puter. This one's for dear ole dad. Told him I could do it. Now... well...

He's got a Gateway 2000 ATX Desktop Case. Prettiest thing ya ever did see. Nice plastic molding. Little flip down doors. Two thumb screws (chrome plated of course) and you can slide the top off to see it's innards.

Inside is a P5-133 ATX board. The CPU has a perty little heatsink cooled by the power supply fan. The fan is mounted to the outside of the power supply.

So... I'd like to upgrade to a Asus P5A ATX mobo with a Diamond Stealth AGP card. The question is... will it fit? Dimension wise are all ATX boards alike? This one is more square than rectangle.

Second... I'll need a better power supply. I don't think this one is big enough for a K6-500 and a nice hot graphics card. But this supply is not like most I've seen in tower cases. Am I right here or am I right.

Could I get some feedback, comments, wise cracks... please.

Thank you!

Ross

I find a 2 LB hammer to be quite useful when they won't. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

It should fit, most cards/components are designed to fit AT and ATX boards. The size of the board has little to do with it, the sockets are usually placed so that the card fits properly and attaches to the slot in back of the case nicely. The smaller size board you describe is designed to fit in smaller cases as well as the mid and full size towers.

You need one of those 2' Craftsman screwdrivers to get it nice and tight though, unless you happen to have a good sturdy impact wrench lying around. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Power supply...why go halfway? Honda makes a really nice 3500 watt generator that should do the trick. I bet it would do 80 on a long straightaway...if that sounds a bit excessive, go for the typical 300 watt ATX power supply...

Now is that an acceptable blend of insanity and solid advice or what? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Oh and go get dear ol' dad some racing goggles...maybe a WWII leather flight cap...wooo hooo!!
