View Full Version : Assigning IRQ for Network Card

Hello.
I'm experiencing a bit of a problem with a new network card (a 1 Mbps PCI Home Newtworking Adapter, it says in the manual =) I purchased a while ago. I installed the card in an available PCI slot (my MB has three PCI slots, all free, sins sound & vid are integrated) and let PnP do the rest. Windows (98, that is) seemed to be doing fine, I loaded the drivers from the diskette supplied with the card and then tried to register via the Internet. Hmmph. I couldn't load a single page. The LINK LED next to the wire slot on the card was working OK, which according to the manual means that the network is connected, but the ACT LED (which when blinking means that traffic is traversing the port) only blinked a few times, then stayed dark.
My problem ( I think) is one of conflicting IRQ numbers. PnP assigned the network card an IRQ of 11, which my integrated video card also happens to use. I can't change the IRQ:s in Device Manager, and although DM says there isn't any resource conflict, the manual EXPRESSIVELY states that the network card needs an IRQ of its own. So...? How do I go about changing the IRQ:s? My motherboard is a High-tech systems (HIS) MVP4, baby AT, with AWARD modular BIOS 4.51. The BIOS doesn´t let me assign IRQ:s directly, it only lets me choose between ISA Legacy and PnP/PCI "settings" for a number of IRQ:s.
If anyopne has had a similar problem (and a solution!) or is just "generally" knowledgeable when it comes to these things, please reply.
Thanks in advance,

Your network card should have come with a setup/diagnostic program which you can run from DOS. (Not a DOS prompt) The program will allow you to set the card up for PnP or manaully set the IRQ and other parameters.
If you need more help post back what brand of NIC your using.

I have a LinkSys 10/100 10Base-T LAN Card or whatever, and I tried to install it too free up a USB for my camera instead of my Cable modem. And I installed it correctly, restarted the computer, and it came up with a BSOD and said the network card created a fatal page fault or something. So I tried so many things to make it work, and finally gave up, removed it, and it's just been sitting here in a box because the Office Max people wont take it back. (More than 30 days)

If you have Windows 98 go into Device manager and make note of the resources used by "PCI steering". (see this Microsoft KB article for more details: Q192844) (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q192/8/44.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=Q192844&rnk=1&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=CHS)) Then boot to DOS, use the NIC card setup/diag program to manually assign resources to the NIC. Just make sure you use unassigned resources.
If your not using 98 post back which OS you use and I'll see if I can help.

Hi again!
Thanks for the replies! I've been trying some stuff, freeing up IRQ:s by disabling COM-ports, USB etc. but the damn NIC somehoe INSISTS on sharing the IRQ with my video card. And since the card is integrated, I can't very well disable it... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
The diskette containing the drivers didn't include a diagnostic tool, I assume the developers/manufacturers assumed PnP would take care of EVERYTHING...right.
The NIC is an AMD HomePNA Network Adapter Card, the 1/10 Mbps kind. It is on the AMD homepage, under networking. There IS an downloadable diagnostic tool for the NIC on the AMD homepage...might be helpful???
Yes, I am using Windows 98 and so far it hasn't given me any major problems...until now. My major concern (other than getting the NIC to work) is the way Windows handles IRQ:s. I guess PnP is an easy, carefree procedure...if it works!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
I'll try downloading the diagnostic utility to a diskette and then transferring it to my HD...and cross my fingers. If it doesn't work I'm open to suggestions...again. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Thanks for the help, I hope I can be of some use someday...

You should probably put the diagnostic tool on a floppy.
Have you tried shuffling the card to the other slots?
Also triy going into device manager, click on computer and then Reserve Resources and reserve IRQ 11, that may force Windows to fin a separate one for eace item currently on 11, although sometimes it will not stick, future reboots may revert them back...

I am having the same problem with my PC.
I have tried Win 2k & Win 98 but, although they say that they are working find in Device manager, I am unable to open web pages.
I can get an IP address, & ping web sites by IP address, but when I try & load a page, I get the msg. "Web site found, waiting 4 reply..."
The connection to the internet is fine, as it works on my other PC. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
Any ideas?

The problem your having is that those pages may contain either alot of scripts or pictures, so depending on the speed of your connection with that web site their taking awhile to load up. There are a few programs that can tweak your internet connection that you can find at most shareware sites.( I think one I saw linked here at the forums was called "tweakdun".)
Here's a link to a site that has some tweaking ideas: http://www.dansdata.com/sbs33.htm
Hope this helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
