View Full Version : Sound card, Modem and IRQ conflicts?

I think I have a problem with the IRQ of my sound card and modem, and would really appreciate anybodies help/assistance/any ideas at all.

Symptom: Whenever I am connected to the internet and I attempt to run anything that uses sound (other than playing CDS), for example WinAmp, Realplayer, the modem tops sending or receiving any new information. It doesn't disconnect, just sits there and refuses to do anything. If I disconnect and try and re-connect, I get a 'Could not detect modem' message.

This makes me think, from what I know and have read on this and other useful PC sites that I have an IRQ conflict. Checking in device Manager I found that my sound card and modem are on the same IRQ, but Windows 95 doesn't think there is any conflict, and it won't let me change the settings. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both the soundcard and the modem both separately and at the same time, but Windows keeps reinstalling them on the same IRQ.

I have included below about as much information as I could find on my systems IRQ settings from device Manager and BIOS.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I've had the exact same problem before.. and it drove me nuts....

My solution (after what seemed like endless searching at the time):

Remove drivers for sound card and reboot
Go into BIOS and disable COM 2 (make note of its previous setting)
Re-install sound card drivers through Windows

Modem should now use IRQ 5 and the sound card use IRQ 9... and hopefully no further conflict

Hope this is of some help

I see one potential problem....

11 VIA PCI Audio controller
???? Sound Blaster?

Do you have on board sound or a sound card? If you have both did you disable the onboard sound before installing the card?

Ok, lets see now.

Yoda, went to that link and I've tried all of those, but it won't let me change the resource settings, even if I un-tick use automatic settings, etc.

Boo Radley, I tried your suggestion, but sound card and modem both still end up on IRQ 11, and I still have the problem.

mjc, under Integrated Peripherals in my BIOS it says Onboard Legacy Audio :Enabled , but Sound Blaster :Disabled, sorry if you couldn't tell this from my first post (I forgot to disable smilies so all my ':D's came out as smilie faces, grrrr)

Thanks for the advice everybody.

One other odd thing I have just discovered, under PNP/PCI Configuration in my Bios if I change 'Slot 3 Use IRQ No. :Auto' to 'Slot 3 Use IRQ No. :5' both my sound card and modem move to IRQ 5. Do you think this might mean that my modem and sound card are in the same slot? I might open up my computer tomorrow and see if I can figure this out, will post what I find out (or don't find out).
