(1)cant get modem to connect to internet. i had a network card
in my micron computer and took it out and put a 56k modem in its
place.w95 supported.i think it may be conflicting even though it
does not say it is. its a chyanne modem.fax,pci. have no sound card.
did not use the driver to install because it could not recognize the
modem. went with the standard modem in w95.irq are set right.is there
some way to turn it on?

Go into your device manager and see if your modem is even there. If it is, click around and see if a driver is loaded. I'm not sure from your post whether or not you loaded one, but your modem won't work without one. 95 does a rotten job at hardware detection in my opinion, so I bet you're going to have to load the driver manually.
If the modem came with a cdrom, the 95 driver utility will ask if you want to search the drive for the driver, but this almost never works. Select browse and look for the driver yourself on the cd. For example, it might be under drivers-95/98. When you find it, highlight it and click ok.
I hope I've understood your question and was able to help.

Hi. I suspect that you have Cheyenne software (? Bitware) but not necessarily a Cheyenne Modem. You have no sound card but do you have on-board sound? Do you have the CDROM? If so I would start over (assuming you are running Win95 on your pc). Remove any references to the network card and modem in Device Manager and shut down. Physically remove the modem. Reboot with no modem inserted and shutdown.
Then, according to the bitware manual that I have (and there should be one on the CDROM):-
Step1: Reboot the computer system after the modem is correctly plug into your 32 bit slot of computer.
Step2: Once the system enter into Windows 95, the system will detect a new hardware found. It will ask you to load in modem driver diskette provided with modem.
Step3: Insert the modem setup CD into CD-ROM ,then click Next> to continue.
Step4: Windows95 will find location of Driver, then click Finish.
After that it should install the "Wave Device for Voice Modem" and an updated driver for "Voice Modem Serial Wave Device".
As yawningdogsaid Win95 can be problematic. I remember having an almost identical problem after switching a network card for a Harmony 56k pci modem using Cheyenne Bitware. BTW Cheyenne bitware can be downloaded if you dont have the CDROM - just search for it using Google. Good Luck.

jgrayrdsc,
It appears that Paul K has steered you in the right direction. I would, however, suggest that you remove the devices in SAFE MODE.
When you boot up the computer begin tapping F8 (Could be F5, although you might need to check your Motherboard Manual). You're usually presented with 4 options...select SAFE MODE.
Find MY COMPUTER...right click and then click on PROPERTIES. Click on DEVICE MANAGER...highlight any instances of the MODEM and click REMOVE. Also, highlight any instances of the NETWORK CARD/LAN CARD or whatever it is called and also click on REMOVE.
Shut down, physically remove the cards...make sure board power is off (if you have any of the anti-static bags around they would be an excellent place to set them)...and then Reboot (restart your computer). You can use the START>SHUTDOWN>RESTART.
Then follow Paul's advice.

Boy is installing a modem in Win 95 a bitch. I just went through this and you already have some excellent advice. One thing I learned is that windows 'knows something' about its hardware in a whole mess of different places and until you clean them *all* up you may not be able to get the thing to play. Usually your modem will come with detailed install instructions as well as driver files -- the software that the CPU uses to talk to the modem. Unless you have this info and it is for Win95 I would strongly suggest trying to find it on the web; I don't think I'd have ever gotten my USR Sportster Winmodem installed without the complete list of files to delete to make Win95 forget that it had ever had a modem.
The reason others have said to shut down and bring it up without a modem installed is to help all parts of windows figure out that, "Yes, I do not have a modem installed" so that the next time when you do install the modem, it will say "Shoot -- now I've got a modem and I need to install drivers." The instructions with my modem said if windows doesn't discover it automatically you will never get it to work.
I had pretty much the same problem when I tried to install a 5-1/4" floppy drive on another machine. After that, windows would never again allow me to install and use a 3-1/2" drive -- it hung while loading the system if the drive was enabled. I could only use it by restarting in DOS mode. I solved that one the easy way -- by reformatting the drive.
