I have S3 Virge VX/PCI display adapter . In the Windows NT 4.0 operating system, there is only 16 color option. I thought it is the problem of the driver. I downloaded the new driver from the Web. In the end of the installation process, I got the meassage: " The installation of new driver can not be finished. You may not have the privilege to install new driver." Why do I get this message?

Is this your own personal machine or a work computer?

WinNT uses different levels of privileges to allow or disallow diferent things on a machine. If it is a work machine then you should talk to the systems administrator about the video driver.

If it's your own machine are you logged in as "user" because that probably doesn't have the access privileges to change drivers.

I logged in as administrator. I chose Have Disk and installed the driver with .inf file. It seemed that it was successful. But after I restarted the computer, there is still only 16 color option. Any explanation? I am quite sure I downloaded the new driver.
Thanks a bunch! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

I'm not that familiar with NT but there should be some sort if standard VGA driver that appears in the list of available drivers (all hardware). Most of the S3 drivers I've dealt with recommend changing to the standard VGA first then installing the updated driver.

I downloaded the driver again and everything worked fine. But after I chose 256 color and reset the refresh rate to 70Hz, the screen went black. I reboot the computer, it went black before it entered Windows. Is there thing I can do about it?

Changing the refresh rate was a mistake. I'm not too familiar with NT, but if it has a Safe Mode, boot into Safe Mode and change the refresh rate back to 60. The monitor can't handle the higher refresh rate.

If NT doesn't have a Safe Mode option, someone else might be able to come up with something else to try. I can't remember, it's been too long since I used NT, and I've slept since then... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
