View Full Version : computer won't let go of modem

Hello everyone. Hope someone knows the answer to this one. My computer manufacturer hasn't figured it out yet.
My OS is Windows ME. My modem is a Conexant HCF V90 56K RTAD Speakerphone PCI modem (long enough?).
Three problems!
1) When I disconnect from the internet, my computer refuses to let go of the modem. I frequently have to restar my computer for it to let go. My computer manufacturer had me do a 32-bit diagnostics (only took 5 hours) and everything passed. Not a clue what to do now!!!

2) When I first boot up my computer my ISP program (I prefer using MSN instead of IE6)automatically pops up. I have gone to properties and checked "never dial a connection, but the program resets itself to "Dial whenever a connection is not present". Lost on this one, too.

3) When my computer is first booted to Windows and I DC my ISP icon, I also get a little box that says "Another program is dialing the selected connection." This also happens at other times, not only when first booted up. I only have one (1) connection set up, so how can another be dialing? Lost a third time!

I apologize if some of this does not belong in this forum. I know some of it is problems with the programs and not the modem.

I want to thank anyone that can provide some information and/or fixes for these problems.

Sincerely,
mrsgkr

hi,

do a control alt delete and see whats running in the background that is trying to connect to the net. If you do not have a firewall get one- Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp) comes to mind.

also from a command prompt you can type: netstat -a this will show you where you're connected to.

do you have kazaa?? or any other P2P file sharing apps??

You should immediately SHUT DOWN ANY email application.

Then do an online scan here (http://housecall.antivirus.com/)

also, go get Ad Aware (http://www.lavasoft.nu/downloads.html)- and run this to get rid of spywarez..

close and do not open your email applications until you be sure your system is clean.

To add to what sea has listed, I believe that MSN by default adds MSNmessenger to the startup list....disable that too. And yes, when run at start up Messanger will try to dial out and connect...

Wouldn't be a bad idea to list what runs at start up....post back with the list. (you can get this by doing a <ctrl><alt><del> right after starting your machine)

Sea & mjc,

Thanks for the info. Here is the info you requested:

At start up:
Explorer
Navapw32
Weather
Loadqm
Webshotstray
Devldr16
Systray

I downloaded Ad Aware and scanned my system. The following items are the only ones left (out of 62 found):
(D) Web Hancer C:\Program Files\WebHancer
(F) Web Hancer C:\Windows\WEBHDLL.DLL
(F) Web Hancer C:\Windows\WEBHDLL.DLL (it is listed twice)
(F) Web Hancer C:\Program Files\WebHancer\Programs\WHIELPR.DLL

I tried deleting these, but it won't let me. It says file in use.

Housecall detected no viruses.

I don't know what "kazaa" or "P2P" file sharing applications are. Therefore, I doubt if I have either one (but I might).

Also, I reconfigured MSN Messenger NOT to start when windows starts.

If there's anymore info you need, let me know.

Thanks again for getting me this far. I hope we can get it solved!!!!!

Sincerely,
mrsgkr
