Serial Port - COM 1
I am trying to resolve a problem with a serial port on a Toshiba laptop. A “device” connected to the serial port is not recognised by its associated software which persists with an error message “Device is not connected”. The device, its connecting cable and the software work OK on my PC. Device Manager reports that the serial port is working properly and I can use other devices through the port therefore I assume (wrongly?) that there is nothing wrong with the port. The sofware company sent me another cable as they thought that there might be an intermittent fault with my cable but the problem persists. The software company also suggested that to resolve any potential conflicts (none are reported in Device Manager - my OS is Win98SE) I should un-install all the software associated with the devices previously used on that port and also the parallel port but that has had no effect.
The simple solution is to give up the idea of using this device on the laptop and resign myself to using it on the PC but there must surely be an answer to the problem. Any ideas on how I might track down the cause of the problem and rectify it would be gratefully received.
