You can find out in a hurry by plugging the unit in to the A/C setup...If it boots.....your batteries may be dead......if it doesnt...there is another problem for sure.......post back with the age of the laptop and make, cpu, os etc and someone will be able to help more.

I bought it 2nd hand and the power supply has broken - before I buy a new power supply I just wanted to know if it's the laptop that's broken or just the battery dead, then i can either take it back or get a power supply. This is my first laptop so I'm not sure if the behaviour of the machine is natural for a dead battery.

It's a Tiny A430 P3 800 (so quite new) using '98 2nd edition

Don't know if this will work with your laptop. But with a Dell you can pull the battery out and at the back of the battery there is a small botton. By holding this botton in you can get a fast read of the battery charge. If you got this laptop second hand without a power supply, then the battery is proably dead. Since it's useless without the power supply to recharge it. There is nothing to loss by getting one.

Mabey some kind computer shop clerk will let you test the supply on your laptop before you buy it.
