I have a HP Omnibook 1200 laptop. Unfortunately, I am unable to bypass the password prompt in the bios. How do I get round this problem?. I am using win98.

Mike I'm not sure if this will help, but I know that on desktops there is usually a bios password clear option on the motherboard. In addition there maybe a key or combination thereof that will clear the cmos settings upon re-boot, but I believe this will clear all of the cmos settings. Check the manufacturer's website. I don't know how you get to the mobo safely.

I don't suppose you can boot to a floppy, but if you could, I have a nifty little .bat file that clears your cmos for you. However, it kinda requires being run from dos. If you can tear apart your laptop (not recommended) you can always remove the bios battery, wait 30 seconds, and put it back in, and that should get you past that password. Third, you can become a lumberjack, living deep in the forest. This would mean you would forget all about computers (definately not recommended).

Not to be picky or anything but when I attempted to clear my CMOS by removing the battery it took over 3 days for it to clear due to the residual current... if you can get hold of one, try shorting a 10 KOhm resistor across the button cell terminals, that should do the trick.

Here are some default passwords from BIOS manufacturers, try 'em they may work, they may not:

AMIBIOS (American Megatrends) = AMI
AWARD BIOS = BIOSTAR or AWARD_SW

Depending on your laptop try taking out a SIMM or a DIMM (unlikely) this would force a configuration change and force the BIOS/CMOS to let you in.

Hope any of this helps. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
