Having run Scandisk in Windows 3.11, the first alphabetical 108 files in the Windows directory were 'repaired' and moved to the root directory. They were renamed as numbered files with 'chk' extensions.

How do I restore them to their original place with their proper names?

Double post. See answer in System Troubleshooting.

I don't believe the damage can be undone. The CHK files are lost clusters, not complete, intact files.

You might be able to salvage some text that might be in them, but I have always just deleted them. This PC Magazine article explains it a little more.
