keyboard problem

I've got an old 486 notebook running windows 3.1. I've got a keyboard and I plug it in and try to use it, it makes weird noises and either types garbage or nothing at all when I press a button on it. I've tryed rebooting etc. I can plug a mouse into the notebook with no probs. I've tryed another keyboard but the same thing happens. Any ideas? Help?

Do you have separate ports for an external keyboard and mouse? If there's only one, maybe it's only for a mouse. What is the make and model of your machine?

The keyboard has two plugs, one serial for the trackball and one 5 pin plug for the keyboard. I have a 6 plug adapter which fits into the back of the notebook, the notebook is... a "notebook computer 486 series" Nowhere on the whole thing does it have a make, but it does have a serial number, but no make.

Sounds like you need an AT type keyboard. I haven't dealt with PS/2-to-AT keyboard adapters; maybe someone has a better idea.
