Wandering cursor

I have a Dell inspiron 8000 laptop, OS is WinMe and it has a Synaptics supplied touchpad installed.
The cursor wanders, stops, wanders stops. You get the idea. It is driving me ******* mad!

Dell support don't. I have updated the drivers and the BIOS. This has not resolved the issue. Any ideas, before I end up gibbering in a corner or my laptop becomes a frisbee, will be gratefully received.

I have an old machine that , when I put a PS2 mouse on it, it does the same thing.
As for a solution, I'm sorry, but I don't know. Just thought I would let you know you are not alone.
Is the machine still under warranty? Did this start out of nowhere? Have you tried looking in DM in Safemode for multipul instances? How about uninstalling it and letting it reinstall?
I have the same touchpad on my Compaq and have had very little trouble with it. How about Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) ?

Have you check your computer for viruses , this could cause this activity.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies.
I have Norton Anti Virus on the machine and it is as up to date as I can make it, so hopefully there is no virus.

Regarding software updates, I've updated the BIOS and all the drivers that I can think of but nothing works. There are a number of hits about this on the Dell forums but no solutions. I would like to see a joint statement from Dell/Synaptics on how they intend to resolve this, but how do you ask the question at the appropriate level to galvanise them into action?

In the UK we have a SALE of GOODS law which states that an item must be 'fit for purpose'. I wonder if that would work.

Apologies for rambling, but it stops the onset of the gibbering already mentioned.

The wandering curser has something to do with script effects.Have you been playing with scripts?

Couldn't pass this one up...just reading the problem I started gibbering!

I would suggest the shotgun approach pump out letters to the Better Business Bureau (if they have one in the UK), as you stated, threatening them with the SALE OF GOODS LAW etc. Or, use the other version of the shotgun approach, pump, and fling that baby as high as you can and release your frustration....the feeling of satisfaction will also release the need to gibber! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I guess you've tried this: "Touch Pad Problems
Check the touch pad settings— Click the Start button, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click the Mouse icon. Try adjusting the settings."

It turns out my track stick was sending spurious signals (both mouse move and clicks). So I just turned it off since I never use it.

Control Panel -> Mouse -> Pointing Stick => Disable device

No problems at all since then. :D
