View Full Version : IBM Thinkpad 1460 start up problem
I have an IBM thinkpad 1460 that hangs up at the press F1 for IBM setup Utility screen. I have tried booting from disk & cd but it will not recognize either.
The problem started after I connected an external USB hard drive with the power on.

it wasn't the USB that did it USB is safe to plug and unplug while she is running thats the advantage of USB.Something else must be going on.With IBM pressing F1 should get you into the Bios on that model,Are you sure the boot disk is good? have you tryed a different one? Will it boot into windows without trying to get into set up?

Did it hang with the USB drive installed or only after you disconnected it?
Can you get into the Setup?

I can not get into setup, if I wait until the Press F1 for setup screen it does nothing, if I press F1 then start it goes to a blank screen with the cursor in the upper left corner.
I have tried two startup disks, one I have used in the past to format & instll Windows 98 on Acer desktops.
It hung with the USB connected.
Battery or AC?

That shows where to find all the model info....there is probably a manual for your machine and we need that.....

* Ensure every connector is connected tightly and correctly.
* Planar board
Follow the procedures below to isolate the failing FRU.
Verify that the power supply being used at the time of the failure is operating correctly.
1. Power off the computer.
2. Check the cables, wires, and connectors for short circuits and open circuits. Visually check them for damage. If any problems are found, replace the FRU.
3. Remove or disconnect all of the following devices:
* Non-IBM devices
* Printer, external mouse & keyboard, and other external devices
* Battery pack
* Hard disk drive
* Diskette drive/CD-ROM drive
* PC Card (PCMCIA)
4. Power on the computer.
5. Determine if the problem has changed.

Hi there,
My first post here. Anyhoo, at my company i take care of about 20 Thinkpads (DOH) and last month i had the same problem with a Thinkpad 1400 series. It turned out the motherboard was dead and needed to be replaced. Cost.... 2000 Canadian. More than the thing was worth. If you cannot even get into the bios the mboard could be the problem. Good Luck.

Im sorry mature lady, my last post was referring to the original problem posted. If i get some free time this afternoon, ill try and find out what the cause of your problem is.
Thanks
matureladys,
I think your problem is a damaged install...since vmm32.vxd is a compiled file, made during installtion it is very difficult to rebuild, usually the only fix is to reformat and reinstall your operating system and other software.
