View Full Version : installing win98
I have win98 second ed installed on my computer....I do not have the option to uninstall it and I was wondering how I would go about doing a clean install. Do I have to delete the win98 dir or do I have to format the whole hard drive. If I do have to format the drive is it hard to set up a partition?? I have a 6.2 gig hard disk...how would I set it up??? Thanks for any help everybody!!

I'll be glad to send you a copy of a boot disk that has all you need to do a win95 or win98 install. It easily lets you partition, fdsk, and install.

To do a clean install you have to format the hard drive.
Hard Disk Partitioning and Formatting Procedure (http://www.pcguide.com/proc/setup/hdd.htm) should help, you may not have to partition the drive, just format it.
Software Procedures (http://www.pcguide.com/proc/sw/index.htm) has information on creating a boot disk, and installing windows.
Quick Guide to a win98 Fresh Start (http://www.hardwarehell.com/fdisk.htm) is a very good walkthrough as well.
Bootdisk (http://www.bootdisk.com) has links to download bootdisks, or you can make one from a friend's computer, if it has the same version of windows you have. Bring your own floppy...

Ok I just want to get this staight before I formet...Do I need to patition the drive or do I just boot with the floppy disk and format c: /s???? I just want to make sure I do the right steps..and the help files are great thank you very much....Mark.J
Your disk is already partitioned, so you can skip that step. The /s switch is not necessary; it is the command that puts system files on the hard drive, but the Windows setup will do that anyway.

You're in luck...In my e-mail I received my daily mailing of the "show notes" from the TechTV show "Call For Help" in there was a link on how to format your hard drive...and now I provide that link to you. I suggest you watch the show if you can get it...and another of their show's titled "The Screensavers".

I hope this adds a little more light and confidence to your undertaking it sure did to mine as this was re-broadcast of sorts. I used their guide to help me through my first new HD and installing a new Operating System.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned. Partitioning should not be necessary, unless the drive is currently running FAT16, which I doubt, and you want to change to FAT32, faster and usually better for win98. Check by running fdisk, display partition information (Option 4) and exit fdisk without making any changes. If it says it's FAT32, you're in good shape. If it says FAT16, you may want to change it, that's optional and up to you.
Just viewing the partition information will not make any changes to the current setup. The only way you can change the current FAT table is to delete the partition(s) and reboot.
