View Full Version : Stupid recycle bin takes forever to empty

Hi all, I am happy with my computer, it just turned one year old. Asus P3BF, P3-500, 416MB RAM, 8GB & 20GB HDDs, currently running Win2K.

Everything works great EXCEPT the *&%$&#^ recycle bin takes forever to empty. This was a problem back when I was running 98, but there were quite a few things that weren't running well under 98, so I went back to 95 until 2000 came out. Anyway, it takes a good 12-15 seconds to empty, no matter how small the file (i.e. a shortcut icon).

Any ideas? My drives are fast (7200), and I don't have any other issues with this system at all. I just can't imagine why this problem would exist.

Yeah, it's not a tragedy, but if your new car had a rear window that squeaked on the way down, you'd be pissed, too.

I'm afraid I am really not sure what this could be. Only thing that comes to mind would be if you have Norton or other similar "enhancements" to the recycle bin running?

Heh, no, I don't have any enhancements installed; I rejected them because they caused too many system freezes http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I guess I can live with it, but I'm sort of obsessive compulsive, so it bugs me. I'll be replacing that drive with something meatier soon, anyway (as he rationalizes).

Is it possible that you are run in "MS-DOS" Capatability Mode? If so, this would slow down your drive considerable, thereby slowing down your ability to empty the recycle bin. Another area that you might want to look at is the amound of Free Space you have, if you have not cleaned up your drive lately etc... What I am thinking is that your drive is working excessivly to do simple tasks, which tells me that it is having to "work around" a bunch of stuff to get things done. If you are running in MS-DOS capatability mode, then that means that you have some 16-bit drivers loading in your startup files, which forces the computer to work slower in a mixed 16-bit/32-bit environment, instead of all 32-bit. Also, you might check to see if you have a file restore utility that runs in the background that automatically backs up deleted files. If you do, then, you might need to reinstall that app. It could have become corrupted.

Hope this helps.

Nope, none of those either! I already tried all the usual stuff--defragging, etc., and I monitor my
drive space fairly intently (due to a constant influx of mp3s). I keep my registry clean, my drives tidy, and my various temporary folders purged.

Nope on the compat. mode, too; it's Win2K. And the drives are new...and I don't notice any other areas where response is slow.

*big shrug* Dunno!

I had a similar problem, in my case it turned out the HD was damaged. It still worked, but took a long time to copy or delete anything. You might try a different HD and see if the same thing happens...

slashco....There's really no reason to be dragging up topics several years old...in most cases if it's more than about a month old, it's considered dead.
Read the last three posts in this (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5610&highlight=do+AND+not+AND+old+AND+posts) thread.

...and hey Paleo Pete, sorry for acting like you:p

Sorry about that, I hadn't looked at the post date. I think I clicked on the little arrow at the bottom of the thread list thinking it would take me to the second page, instead of the last one... I'll pay more attention next time.

First off I think you guys need to work on your personal problems. And guy with the recycle bin problem. You're acting like you're using a PC from like 8 years ago. You gotta upgrade that stuff already.

look at the date of the thread it is 8 years old ;)

so have you got a point to make or do you just like to piggy back on other threads?
