In programs running after ctrl+alt+del sys is not displayed it should be right? In the systym config. utility it's checked is there an other place to check? Alos so I don't where to ask this question but when on the net at one site then trying to go to another I just get white screen no errors. Then to get back on the net I have to reboot. My computer is Gateway pentium II 64 ram running win 98 sys resourses are at 84% after bootup then later in the day it will be 67%.

Ctrl + Alt + Del should show Explorer, Systray, rundll, and Rnaapp plus whatever other programs you are running.
The internet problem I'm not sure about, check your internet options by right clicking the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop, or going to the Tools option in the menu bar. Under the Advanced tab check to see that it is set to show pictures and animations, enable page transitions, enable smart image dithering, and check the java settings. If Java JIT compiler is enabled, try disabling it, or the opposite if not.
The reconnecting problem would be somewhere in the connection settings, or another program trying to use the modem, such as fax software. Might take some digging to find it. Start by taking anything that might use the modem out of the Start Up folder. I create a temporary folder somewhere and drag them to it so I can re-add them later, but I never do. I keep my Start Up folder empty at all times.

Explorer is only one showing in Ctrl+Alt+Del. So how do I get the 3 mention back?

If you're running win 98 go to Start\Run and type msconfig and click the Start Up tab. Check the list and you should see Systray there. Put a check in the box beside it.
In win 95 I think you'll have to edit either system.ini or win.ini, but not sure which, or where the related line would be.

Systray is the tool tray at bottom right, it should be loaded by Windows by default. If it's not there, I'm not sure how to fix it. Rundll and Rnaapp aren't always there, just depends on the system.
Only way I know of to get the items back would be a reinstall, which I do not recommend unless you're also having serious problems with the system, and can't fix it without a format/reinstall. If it works, don't worry about it. Shouldn't be a problem. Are your clock and volume control showing at bottom right corner of screen on the tool bar? If so, your tool tray, or task tray, is there.
For the Internet problem go to Start\Settings\Control Panel and double click Add/Remove Programs Scroll down to Internet Explorer and Internet Tools, highlight it and click the Add/Remove button and run the Internet Explorer repair tool. See if that helps.

The Internet Explorer and Internet Tools are not in Add/Remove Programs.

I think if you're not showing IE or IE tools in programs, then you have the version that's on the win98 CD, i.e. not from windows update. I don't think it's possible to uninstall it if that's the case.
Anyway, you can reinstall windows without having to reinstall all of your programs or losing your settings, just boot from the start up floppy and select from the 3 options appropriately. That should take care of IE too.
Also, in win98 there is an internet explorer repair feature, but the way you do it is to uninstall. You then get a menu asking if you would like to repair or restore the orig. ver. etc. If you're not able to see the uninstall tho maybe you could download from windows update (or install from an MSN CD, they send them to you free). Once you upgrade, the program will be intact, then you might recognize that you have a modem problem.
You might try to uninstall/reinstall your Internet Service Provider's installation/network settings program rather than messing with your network properties because "unbound" services/protocols may not be displayed because of a windows bug.
My ver. of win98 (se) is OEM, so I know that at least with that you can reinstall non-destructively, i.e. w/o fdisk or format, don't know about the upgrade or retail version though.
If you just wan't to fix it and be done with it, I would say that the reinstall would be the least painful way to go, however trying to sort it all out the hard way might prove to be a learning experience.
Good luck to you.
