Trying to upgrade to 2000 pro but keep getting this error stating that 'Windows cannot detect the current version of windows you are running' please help....
Never installed Win2k. I'd imagine this would occur first of all if you try to install an upgrade version of Windows on a clean system.
Otherwise, really need more information about what you are doing. Also check the MS Knowledge Base.

Your problem MAY be attributed to any of the following:
A> It might be because you're using a cracked copy of Windows 2000.
B> It might be because you're using a cracked copy of Windows 9x (previous version on your system).
C> It could be because you don't have an UPGRADE version of Windows 2000.
D> It might have something to do with corrupted files on your hard drive.
E> Finally, it may be because you have a FAT32 file system and are trying to install Windows 2000 using NTFS, or any number of probs relating to file system configurations.
...Not too sure if I'm getting anywhere, but hope I was helpful nevertheless! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

As long as you have the CD for the version of Windows you're updating, that should be enough (Win 2000 should ask for it if it can't find your installation).
PS - can't you start the installation from within your current version of Windows? (so it doesn't have to look for it)

what operating system do you have? you can only upgrade from the previous version ie. 95-98 , 98-2000 if you do have 98... enter dos c: look for i386 directory then type winnt then follow directions.........
or you can back up what you need - put in the cd and let it boot your computer ie. the cd should be in there before you press power it's bootable so it contain all system files to boot your computer you should se a blue screen follow directions..... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

shadowmonkx even if are installing the full version you can still upgrade as well as a clean install, ie dual booting
oh one thing that will work for sure is if you install a fresh system ie, format C: and install your old OS and then upgrade
