somebody gave me an old pc 486sx 8mb memory and 270 mb capacity hard disk.
Can I install win95 and internet explorer + office 97 to that crawling machine?
I can add memory or drive capacity.

Yes, you can. The minimum system requirements are 386DX, 4 MB RAM, and 40MB hdd space. I have windows 98 running on a 486dx66, and it's a bit slow but acceptable for my purposes.

Hi Terei. If you install the Internet Explorer browser only along with a minimum install of Microsoft Office, you should have enough room on your hard drive and still allow some free space for the Win95 swap file. Hard drives that are crammed completely full don't function very well, and you won't have alot of space to spare. 8 to 16 more mb of memory would help the speed of the system.
Good Luck! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

If I will upgrade the Hard Drive to say 1 GB and 32mb of memory do you think it will make the IE and office 97 run a bit faster or peform well..

More memory and space will certainly help! I ran Win95 for a long time on a 486DX33 with 16mb RAM and a 540mb hard drive, along with Netscape, Microsoft Office 97, and various games and applications. It took a while to boot up, but once there it worked just fine... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

You're asking for a world of pain if you run Win95 on any machine with 8 MB of RAM. Let's put it this way: Windows will run faster on a 486 wiht 32 MB of RAM than a Pentium 233 with 8 MB of RAM.

I built my son an almost identical machine and had no trouble with W95 or Netscape rather than IE but Office 97 would be a real stretch. I'd go with a small installation of MS Works if it were me and bump to 16 or 32 memory and still leave a full install of Office 97 off.
