after i open up "fdisk.exe"
fdisk ask if i want large disk support .
i didn't reply but exit via the close
box at the top right hand corner .
now i got an additional drive letter "E"
my "D" drive is now "E" and "D" is now
inaccessible but actually it does not exist.

how do i return to the original drive
setup ?
my previous setup was
hard drive : "C" active partition;
"D" secondary partition
cd-rom : "F"

I think you may have booted with a Windows Startup disk and the extra drive you are seeing is actually a RAMDISK (a drive created in memory), which is then loaded with DOS utilities from the floppy. When you make the C: drive bootable, or boot with floppy that does not have the startup batch file, you should find that your configuration is the same as before.

Fdisk and Format Procedure (http://www.pcguide.com/proc/setup/hdd-c.html) might help.
